Every school starts on 75.0. A win pushes the rating up and a loss pulls it down. Beating a strong side, or winning away from home, counts for more than beating a weak one at home. So a school that wins its big games will sit above one that just played a lot.

R is how many rated matches a school has played this season. One is enough to get on the table, so early in the season a single result can move a school a long way.

Games against touring and representative teams still count in a school’s record. They just don’t change its rating.
